Antonio Tajani, a former European commissioner and spokesperson for Italy’s Silvio Berlusconi, was elected Tuesday to be the next president of the European Parliament. The Italian conservative politician was elected in the fourth round of voting and beat the socialist candidate Gianni Pitella. Tajani will replace Martin Schulz, who has served as president for five years. European Liberals (ALDE) and conservatives (EPP) united to secure Tajani's win, promising to curb the influence of anti-EU populists. With Tajani, the center-right are now in charge of the three main EU institutions.
