Przewodnik ten ma pomóc internautom w wysyłaniu i odbieraniu zaszyfrowanych wiadomości e-mail, co ma zapobiec ujawnieniu ich treści osobom, próbującym je przechwycić. Przy pomocy wolontariuszy, przewodnik został przetłumaczony do tej pory na 11 języków. Powodem jego wydania jest narastający nadzór, który narusza prawa podstawowe, takie jak prawo do prywatności, i zagraża korzystaniu z innych wolności, w tym ze swobody wypowiedzi.
