Do tragicznego wypadku doszło u wybrzeżu Lampedusy 11 października 2013 roku. Utonęło 268 osób, w tym 60 dzieci. W tym czasie statek włoskiej marynarki wojennej znajdował się zaledwie kilka kilometrów dalej, ale zignorował sygnał SOS i nie interweniował. Trwa dochodzenie przeciwko siedmiu oficerom i podoficerom marynarki wojennej i straży przybrzeżnej, którzy są oskarżeni o nieudzielenie pomocy i nieumyślne spowodowanie śmierci. Wniosek o wstrzymanie śledztwa został odrzucony.
