Una legge approvata nel 2014 prevedeva la chiusura dei sei ospedali psichiatrici giudiziari italiani entro il 31 marzo 2015 e la creazione di varie strutture di assistenza più piccole. Ma la legge non è tuttora stata applicata e queste strutture non sono ancora state chiuse. L'ONG italiana L'Altro Diritto ha di recente aiutato 58 persone detenute nell'ospedale psichiatrico giudiziario toscano a fare ricorso contro questa detenzione illegale.
