In vista della Giornata per un Internet più sicuro, il 6 febbraio 2018, la Cancelliera tedesca Angela Merkel ha dichiarato che la Legge Tedesca sul Potenziamento della Rete (NetzDG) deve essere rivista e possibilmente modificata. La Merkel ha fatto questo annuncio in un podcast pubblicato il 2 febbraio. La NetzDG è entrata in vigore a pieno regime il 1 gennaio 2018. L'obiettivo è contrastare i discorsi di odio le 'fake news' in rete chiedendo ai social network di rimuovere i contenuti illegali dalle loro piattaforme entro 24 ore.
