Varadkar è il primo presidente del consiglio gay in Irlanda. Il matrimonio omosessuale è stato legalizzato solo due anni fa in Irlanda. Inoltre, il neo-primo ministro è figlio di un immigrato indiano. Varadkar ha commentato così la sua nomina: "Penso che la mia elezione a leader di Fine Gael oggi dimostri che il pregiudizio non ha spazio in questa Repubblica."
