L'UEFA, l'ente che gestisce il calcio europeo, ha aggiunto il criterio del rispetto dei diritti umani tra quelli alla base della selezione della nazione che ospiterà gli europei 2024, la competizione internazionale più importante d'Europa. L'organizzazione deciderà a settembre 2018 tra Germania e Turchia, gli unici due paesi ad aver manifestato l'interesse a ospitare i giochi. I due paesi hanno tempo fino al 27 aprile 2018 per presentare formalmente la propria candidatura. L'UEFA fonda i criteri sui Principi Guida delle Nazioni Unite sulle Imprese e i Diritti Umani e su altre convenzioni ONU.
