A inizio marzo gli abitanti della città bulgara di Belene si sono uniti in protesta contro il collocamento di una famiglia di rifugiati siriani nella città. I rifugiati erano arrivati su invito del sacerdote locale, Padre Paolo Cortese, che li ha accolti e aiutati a integrarsi nella comunità. La famiglia siriana ha deciso di lasciare Belene per via degli atteggiamenti ostili ricevuti e il prete se ne è andato dalla Bulgaria quando a iniziato a ricevere minacce di morte. "La Bulgaria è morta a Belene; la giustizia è morta a Belene" ha dichiarato Padre Cortez, poco prima di lasciare il paese.
