L'Italia è salita dal 97° al 54° posto nel Global Right to Information Rating grazie alla Legge sulla Libertà di Informazione (Freedom of Information Act -FOIA), approvata nel maggio 2016 e in vigore dal 23 dicembre. Il FOIA autorizza tutti i cittadini ad accedere ai documenti della pubblica amministrazione senza bisogno di fornire il motivo della richiesta. La legge obbliga anche i funzionari pubblici a rispondere alle richieste dei cittadini. L'introduzione della nuova legge è stata possibile grazie al lavoro di Foia4Italy, una coalizione guidata da Diritto di Sapere e sostenuta da CILD.
