La Comisaria de Justicia de la UE, Vera Jourova, afirmó ante el Parlamento Europeo el 7 de febrero que Rumanía se encuentra en un "momento crucial", pues el parlamento debate dos polémicas leyes sobre el poder judicial, ambas consideradas inconstitucionales. Las enmiendas fueron aprobadas en diciembre y están siendo revisadas por el máximo tribunal del país, que ya dictaminó que algunas partes eran inconstitucionales. "Ahora que los primeros dos proyectos de ley han vuelto al parlamento tras la revisión y fallos del Tribunal Constitucional, es un momento crucial", dijo Jourova.
