La Comisión Europea ha aprobado una propuesta que obliga a los Estados miembros a garantizar a todos los ciudadanos el acceso al agua potable. Los Estados miembros deben adoptar medidas para promover un uso adecuado del agua, fomentando, por ejemplo, el uso del agua del grifo en edificios públicos y restaurantes, y poniendo fuentes en las ciudades. Las cifras indican que hay 20 millones de europeos que no tienen acceso a agua potable, especialmente en países con comunidades marginadas. En los países donde el agua está privatizada, las empresas pueden cortar el suministro a quienes no paguen.
