Antes del 6 de febrero, Día de Internet Segura, la Canciller alemana Angela Merkel ha dicho que la Ley conocida como NetzDG, contra el discurso de odio en línea, debe evaluarse y posiblemente modificarse. Merkel ha hecho el anuncio en un video podcast que se emitió el 2 de febrero. La ley NetzDG entró plenamente en vigor el 1 de enero de 2018. Está diseñada para contrarrestar el odio y las "noticias falsas" en Internet y obliga a las redes sociales a eliminar el contenido ilegal de sus plataformas en 24 horas.
