Una investigación de la Asociación de Consumidores Neerlandesa muestra que muchas empresas comparten datos de clientes con Facebook sin su consentimiento para obtener más publicidad. En Países Bajos, compartir esa información sin permiso está prohibido por la Ley de Protección de Datos, como ratificó la Agencia de Protección de Datos (AP). Sin embargo, no todas las empresas han dejado de hacerlo, pues alegan que es una práctica común y que encriptan los datos, lo que hace imposible que puedan ser utilizados por Facebook. Según la AP, el hecho de que estén encriptados o no, no es relevante.
