El Alto Tribunal de Ámsterdam condenó a cadena perpetua el 29 de junio a los 4 sospechosos en el llamado caso "Rito de paso", que implicaba asesinatos de pandillas. Una decisión sorprendente. En abril de 2016, el Tribunal de Estrasburgo dictaminó en el caso Murray vs Países Bajosque el sistema neerlandés infringía el artículo 3 del CEDH pues "una sentencia de cadena perpetua solo puede ser compatible con el artículo 3 si existe una perspectiva de liberación y una posibilidad de revisión". El tribunal de Ámsterdam afirmó que esa decisión no impide imponer una sentencia de cadena perpetua.
