Italia ha subido del puesto 97 al 54 en el Ránking Global de Derecho a la Información gracias a la Ley de Libertad de Información (FOIA), una nueva ley introducida en mayo de 2016 que entrará en vigor el 23 de diciembre de 2016. La FOIA permite que todos los ciudadanos puedan acceder a documentos de la administración pública sin necesidad de dar ninguna explicación y obliga a los funcionarios a responder a sus preguntas. La introducción de la nueva ley fue posible gracias al trabajo de Foia4Italy, una coalición liderada por Diritto di Sapere y apoyada por CILD.
