A Journey through Italian Prisons: One Year Later

One year ago, the European Court of Human Rights sentenced Italy for inhuman and degrading treatment in relation to prison conditions. It gave Italy one year to solve the problems. One year later, what does prison life look like now?

In 2013, the European Court of Human Rights ruled against Italy in the case Torreggiani and Others v. Italy for violating Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights. Mr. Torreggiani and six other prisoners had spent time in very overcrowded cells, where living conditions were qualified by the Court as inhuman and degrading. Thousands of analogous complaints were pending in Strasbourg. For the Torreggiani judgment, the Court decided to designate it as a pilot judgment and adjourned the other decisions, giving Italian authorities one year to improve prison conditions and address the other issues specified in Torreggiani. One year has passed, so what has happened in Italian prisons? Antigone has produced its first film on the current conditions.
