Online Democracy: See How EU Governments Are Going Digital

Eight in 10 Europeans used internet at least once a week last year, according to Eurostat. But although going online is now a part of everyday life, it is still not being fully used to boost democracy.

Could the internet be a way to put young people in touch with decision-makers? Are online tools for democracy safe from hacking?
European citizens and MEPs alike are excited but wary about using the internet to enhance democracy. While it could be a great way to connect citizens directly with their representatives and other officials, there is great concern over its safety and vulnerability to hacking – so much so that authorities said all votes cast in the recent Dutch elections would be counted manually.
