On Monday, several Supreme Court justices in Poland returned to work after the EU Court of Justice ordered Poland to immediately suspend a law that lowers the retirement age for Supreme Court judges to 65 from 70. Twenty-three of the court’s judges were forced to retire in July after the law took effect, prompting the EU to refer Poland to the Court of Justice in September. The top judge on the Supreme Court, Malgorzata Gersdorf, who called the judicial reform a “purge of the Supreme Court conducted under the guise of retirement reform,” was among those reclaiming their posts.
