Criminal proceedings against Sea Watch began in April 2018, after a ship of the NGO was accused of bringing migrants to Italy. Criminal proceedings against Proactiva Open Arms’s ship, Golfo Azzurro, began in May 2017, following alleged inconsistencies in the way in which over 220 migrants had been rescued and disembarked in Lampedusa. In June 2018, Palermo magistrates stated that "in light of the investigations carried out, no concrete evidence was found showing any connection between the people who intervened in the rescue operations and the traffickers operating on Libyan territory."
