Twenty-three NGOs have sent a letter to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) to reconsider its judgment that a 3-year suspended prison sentence for engaging in a symbolic protest didn’t violate the freedom of expression right guaranteed by Article 10 of the Convention on Human Rights. Signees of the letter hope the referral request will bring the Sinkova v. Ukraine case to the Grand Chamber. The ECtHR in February ruled that there had been no violation of Article 10. The letter says that ruling departs from what were considered well-established principles of the Court’s case law.
