Fifteen prisoners who have brought their case to the European Court of Human Rights have settled with the Lithuanian government for individual sums ranging from €2,200 to €15,700. These compensation payments follow acknowledgment that the prison conditions in which they lived were severe. Normally, a violation is found when prisoners are given less than 3 sq. meters of space each. This isn’t the first time that Lithuania is forced to empty its coffers due to poor conditions in its major prisons – roughly a million euros was spent on settlements in 2016 alone.
