New figures from the UK show an almost fivefold increase in reports of alleged female genital mutilation (FGM) to police. Between 2014 and the end of 2016, responses by 47 police departments to freedom of information requests show there were 1,337 reported cases of FGM, rising from 137 in 2014 to 647 in 2016. Despite this, and despite the fact that FGM has been illegal in the UK for more than three decades, there is yet to be a successful prosecution. The first case, in 2015, resulted in a doctor being acquitted in under 30 minutes.
