In the case Mockutė v. Lithuania, the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg found that Lithuania violated two articles of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR): the right to privacy and the right to freedom of religion. Without the patient‘s consent, the Vilnius Psychiatric Hospital revealed sensitive and private information to the media and her mother, violating Article 8 of the ECHR (right to private life). Article 9 was also violated when the medical staff failed to respect the woman’s religion and restricted her right to practice it during her forced hospitalization.
