Jan Kuciak, an investigative reporter for the
Slovak news site Aktuality.sk, was found dead along with his girlfriend in his
apartment outside Bratislava. Police, who discovered the bodies on 25 February, said that the murders are likely connected to Kuciak's work. He had been investigating suspicious transactions by firms linked to businessman Marian
Kocner and connected to a luxury apartment complex that became the
center of a political scandal. Both Slovak President Andrej Kiska and Prime Minister Robert Fico condemned the killings; the latter convened an emergency government
meeting.
