The number of people trying to reach the EU through the Mediterranean fell 63% in the first 10 months of 2017 compared to 2016. This year's number for that period stood at 173,000, according to Frontex, the EU border agency. The majority - 112,000 - crossed the sea to Italy, and most these people came from Tunisia. The corridor through Greece accounted for 31,500. Numbers to Spain climbed 100%, to 15,500.
