Under new Home Office proposals for post-Brexit rights, all 3 million EU nationals living in the UK will have to apply for a "settled status" identity card to be able to remain and work in the country. The proposals, set down in a 15-page policy paper, call for a new "light touch" online application system that gives applicants the same "indefinite leave to remain" status as many non-EU nationals who have also lived in Britain for five years. The new "settled status" residence document will essentially be an identity card backed up by a central database run through the Home Office.
