Lithuania must take into account the geopolitical situation in the region and information offensives, which seek to undermine public confidence in the Lithuanian state and in its partners in the European Union and NATO, make citizens doubt democratically elected authorities and question democracy itself, and promote legal nihilism and civic apathy.

The Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, the Homeland Union - Lithuanian Christian Democrats, the Labour Party, the "Order and Justice" party and the Liberal Movement of the Republic of Lithuania have initiated an agreement between the political parties in Parliament with the aim of protecting human rights and freedoms in Lithuania.

Solving the issue of citizenship

The first discussions regarding the draft agreement between party representatives are already underway. The draft agreement proposes for political parties to aim to amend the law and the Constitution to ensure that Lithuanian citizenship is available to all people of Lithuanian descent who desire it, regardless of any other citizenship these people may hold.

Focus on human rights protection policies

The agreement further proposes that the parties should agree on increasing the openness and independence of the judiciary, reducing the number of people sentenced to life imprisonment (without the possibility of parole), improving the defense of human rights in Lithuania, as well on many other important matters.

The draft document also stresses the need to reinforce human rights and freedoms protection policies, increasing their coordination to pay more attention to individual social groups whose rights and freedoms may not have been ensured adequately, and to encourage society and individual social groups to participate in order to ensure human rights and freedoms.

The parties that have started to work on the draft agreement shall present their assessment in June, at the same time proposing what parts of the agreement should be discussed further.
