The United Nations secretary-general announced yesterday the appointment of Ivan Šimonović of Croatia as his special adviser on the responsibility to protect. Šimonović, who currently serves as the head of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in New York, will assume his new post on October 1, 2016. A statement from the UN said Šimonović will work to "further the political, institutional and operational development of the responsibility to protect principle." Prior to joining the UN in 2010, Šimonović was Croatia's minister of justice.
