The anti-immigration Danish People’s Party wants to prevent students from speaking Arabic in Denmark’s public schools. Under the proposal, students would not be allowed to speak Arabic at all in schools, including during break times. The head of the Danish Teachers' Union said the idea was a clear violation of freedom of speech, and it's unlikely the bill will become law, but proponents support the proposal by citing a recent PhD thesis documenting how Arabic-speaking students in two schools used the language to insult Danish-speaking students and teachers who couldn’t understand them.
