Sweden Urged to Investigate Unlawful Police Conduct During Evictions

The police have behaved inadequately during evictions of vulnerable EU citizens, and the human rights organization Civil Rights Defenders is now demanding an investigation into the eviction practices of the police.

On June 22, Civil Rights Defenders handed in a complaint to the parliamentary ombudsman regarding the systematic evictions of vulnerable EU citizens by the police in Farsta-Vantör, Stockholm, during the last few months.

Civil Rights Defenders is drawing attention to the fact that the police in Farsta-Vantör are purposefully and systemically working to clear out unlawful settlements of vulnerable EU citizens.

The evictions have been characterized by a lack of information in a language that the persons concerned can understand, unnecessary confiscation of property, negative discrimination in relation to Swedish citizens, and legal uncertainty in other respects.

Civil Rights Defenders claims that the actions of the Swedish police are incompatible with both national and international law.

Therefore, Civil Rights Defenders asks the parliamentary ombudsman to review the eviction practices by the Farsta-Vantör police, in order to shed light on whether or not their actions to clear out unlawful settlements and to prevent re-establishment is consistent with Swedish law, EU law, and the international conventions that Sweden has ratified.
